Maytag Refrigerator Water Leaks
As troublesome as a leaking refrigerator can be, there’s usually a straightforward cause and solution. Wondering why is my Maytag refrigerator leaking? A water filter that’s damaged or incorrectly installed could be the reason. Troubleshoot common causes for a Maytag refrigerator leaking water and how to solve the problem.
Maytag Refrigerator Leaking Water? Here’s How to Locate the Leak
Whether it’s a puddle on the floor or inside the refrigerator door, there are usually several possibilities for a Maytag refrigerator leaking water. Here’s how to effectively troubleshoot each one and put a stop to messy leaks.
1. Refrigerator Water Line Leaking
Water line issues are a common reason for a leaking refrigerator. Aside from a puddle on the floor, slow ice and water production can also signify this type of leak.
These issues can result in Maytag refrigerator water line leaks:
- Damaged water supply line: Cracks in your home’s water supply line can result in leaks under the refrigerator and should be repaired by a plumber.
- Loose water inlet hose: This hose transports water from the water line to the refrigerator but can drip water if it’s loose. Make sure the hose is securely fitted in the supply valve and the refrigerator’s water inlet valve.
- Water inlet hose is damaged: If the hose has holes or cracks, it will leak water. A damaged hose requires replacement.
2. Defective Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve is where the water inlet hose connects to the refrigerator. This valve opens and closes, as needed, to supply the refrigerator with water. If your Maytag refrigerator is leaking water from behind, the valve may be cracked or loose and dripping water. While a loose valve can be tightened to stop the leak, a damaged valve must be replaced.
3. Leaking From Refrigerator Water Filter
Refrigerator water filters are another common source of leaks. Cracks or holes in the filter head or housing can result in a Maytag refrigerator leaking water from water dispenser. A filter that’s not installed or fitted correctly can also cause leaks.
Refer to your user manual’s filter installation instructions to make sure the filter is fitted properly. These instructions should also specify the brand and type of filter your refrigerator requires. Maytag recommends only using an OEM filter, and not a generic brand, for proper fit and function. A damaged filter can’t be fixed or adjusted and must be replaced.
4. Clogged Defrost Drain
Is your Maytag refrigerator leaking inside the freezer? These leaks could be from a clogged defrost drain. This drain transports residual water from the defrost system to the drain pan beneath the refrigerator. Sometimes the drain can become clogged with ice, causing the water to leak into the freezer.
Consult your user manual to determine how to access the defrost drain. Most are located behind a panel on the freezer’s rear wall. After accessing the drain, it can be flushed with warm water to dispel the clog.
5. Leaking From Refrigerator Drain Pan
The defrost drain tube deposits water in the drain pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. Once there, it soon evaporates with the assistance of the evaporator fan. However, if the drain pan is cracked or has a hole, the water will leak before it has a chance to evaporate.
