GE Dishwasher Won’t Start
Your dishwasher is loaded and the detergent dispenser is filled, but nothing happens when you press the Start button. Does this sound familiar? Though a GE dishwasher not starting can feel like a cause for panic, there’s no need to fear the worst. Checking for common causes like power issues and incorrect cycle settings can solve the problem quickly and easily.
Common Causes For A GE Dishwasher Not Starting
So, how do you fix a GE dishwasher that won’t start? Troubleshooting the most likely reasons can find the source of the problem. Though some may require a repair, many have simple fixes that you can perform at home.
#1. Dishwasher Not Getting Power
Sometimes a GE dishwasher not starting is more of a power issue than a dishwasher malfunction. We first suggest checking your dishwasher’s power sources to make sure they’re functioning properly:
- Make sure the dishwasher is correctly plugged into a functioning electrical outlet.
- Confirm that the power switch is on. Switches are often located under the sink or on the wall near the dishwasher.
- Check your home’s circuit breaker or fuse box for tripped breakers or blown fuses. Reposition any tripped breakers or replace blown fuses.
#2. Problem With Water Supply
Water supply issues can also be responsible when your GE dishwasher won’t start. Make sure the water supply valve to the dishwasher is in the on position and assess the water supply hose for kinks or tears. While you can carefully straighten any kinks in the hose, a cracked or leaking hose requires replacement.
If the supply valve and hose are functioning properly, a GE dishwasher not starting may be due to a defective water inlet valve. This valve opens and closes to allow water to enter the dishwasher at the right points in the wash cycle. We suggest that a professional service assess and replace the water inlet valve as needed.
#3. Incorrect Dishwasher Cycle Settings
When starting your dishwasher first make sure a cycle is selected. The dishwasher will not start until a cycle is specified. Meanwhile, certain features like the GE dishwasher child lock setting or Delay Start feature can prevent an immediate start. Check your control panel display codes to see if these settings are enabled. Holding down the Start button for 3 seconds should disable any selected cycle.
In some cases, moisture or damage to the control panel could result in the GE dishwasher display not working properly, preventing cycle selection. We recommend that a professional service assess and replace the display if necessary.
#4. Dishwasher Door Isn’t Latched Shut
Lastly, the dishwasher will only start if the door is properly secured. Make sure nothing is blocking the door. Knowing how to load dishes correctly can ensure that the door closes properly. Confirm that the door is closed all the way and the latch is engaged.
